In Wollongong, New South Wales, on September 29, 1988, Alexander Volkanovski was born. His mother is Greek, and his father was born in the hamlet of Beranci in Yugoslavia, then known as SR Macedonia (now North Macedonia). Greco-Roman wrestling was Alex’s early passion, and by the age of twelve, he won two national titles. At the age of 14, he made the decision to give up wrestling in favor of a front-row rugby league career. Volkanovski completed his high school education at Lake Illawarra and began working as a concreter upon graduating.
Alexander Volkanovski was the top player in the Group 7 Rugby League in 2010 when he won the Mick Cronin Medal while playing semi-professional rugby league for the Warilla Gorillas. Additionally, he was a key player in Warilla’s 2011 Premiership-winning campaign. He was named Man of the Match for his efforts in his team’s triumph over Gerringong in the Grand Final. In the latter part of 2011, Volkanovski made the decision to give up rugby league at the age of 23, in order to focus on developing a professional career in mixed martial arts.
